About the Position
The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs is led by the Associate Provost for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs who reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and advises the Provost and Chancellor on diversity issues. The Associate Provost for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs serves as the chief diversity officer for the University, collaborating with Vice Chancellors, Deans, other administrators, faculty, staff, and students to generate and implement strategies and initiatives that will further our diversity goals.
Major areas of responsibility include:
- Strategic planning and policy development. The Associate Provost for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs develops and refines a comprehensive vision of campus diversity and generates long and short-range goals, strategies, and structures to realize this vision. This requires consultation and partnership with senior University leadership, the Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board, and members of the wider campus community. A major responsibility will be to continually assess the status of these efforts and the outcomes and accomplishments that result. The person will present an Annual Report on the status of diversity endeavors to the Board of Trustees and to the Deans’ Council.
- Program development, implementation, and evaluation. The individual in this position will oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of diversity initiatives and programs designed to further the University’s diversity goals. The Associate Provost also will partner with administrative, research, instructional, and public service units whose programs and activities support and enhance diversity efforts.
- Promoting the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. This position administers and supports programs and activities dedicated to recruiting and retaining students, faculty, and staff members of diverse backgrounds. This involves strong working partnerships with academic units, the EEO/ADA Office, and the Office of Human Resources regarding faculty and staff recruitment and retention, and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the graduate and professional schools to enhance the diversity of the student body. The Associate Provost for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will collaborate with the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid and with the University’s numerous student support, pipeline, and orientation offices and programs.
- External relations and partnership development. The Associate Provost for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will represent the University in discussions of diversity in the national higher education community, participate in outreach programs to engage diverse local, state, and regional communities, and coordinate with the General Alumni Association on alumni outreach programs and with the Office of Development.
- Fiscal and administrative oversight and fundraising. The person in this position will be responsible for overseeing the Diversity and Multicultural Affairs office, including annual budget development and reporting and day-to-day budget management, and supervision of administrative and program staff. He or she will help seek internal and external sources of support, consult on fundraising strategies, and develop strategies for the allocation of resources to support existing and emerging diversity priorities.
Successful Candidates
Qualifications of the successful candidate must include:
- A distinguished record of experience as a leader, educator, advocate and/or scholar in an academic setting.
- An earned doctorate or terminal degree that will serve to enhance the stature and academic visibility of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
- Knowledge of major academic and diversity issues facing universities, and a strong vision for and commitment to diversity endeavors in a large, public, research university.
- Excellent administrative skills, including strategic planning and evaluation, budgeting, personnel management, fundraising and public relations.
- An ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multiple administrative units throughout the campus. Excellent communication skills.
- Integrity, a passion for academic excellence, exceptional leadership skills, and compassion for students, staff and faculty.
- Demonstrated ability to be a strong advocate for the University both within and outside the academic environment. Commitment to engagement with local, state, national and international communities.
- Capacity to lead efforts to strengthen faculty, staff, student and alumni inclusivity.
