Dean of Admissions (CLOSED)
Long Island University, one of the nation’s largest independent universities, invites inquiries, applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Admissions at its Brooklyn Campus. As the original unit of Long Island University, the Brooklyn Campus has enrolled and educated generations of students historically underrepresented in higher education. Located in the heart of downtown Brooklyn, at the hub of a vibrant cultural renaissance, the Campus serves a remarkably diverse population of approximately 4,300 undergraduate, 2,700 graduate and 3,000 continuing education students from across the state, country and the world. It offers over 200 programs in the liberal arts and sciences, health professions and pharmacy, with doctoral programs in Clinical Psychology, Pharmaceutics, Physical Therapy DPT, and Pharmacy (PharmD). An NCAA Division I institution, the Brooklyn Campus fields 18 athletic teams. The mission of the Brooklyn Campus is to awaken, enlighten and expand the minds of its students, providing an academic community where cultural, ethnic, religious, racial and individual differences are respected and commonalities are affirmed.
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of Admissions serves on the Provost’s cabinet and oversees the graduate and undergraduate admissions processes in the offices of Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions, International Admissions, and Admissions Marketing. The Dean will supervise 26 administrative and clerical personnel and oversee a budget of over $4 million. In conjunction with the Deans of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; the Schools of Business, Public Administration and Information Sciences; Education; Health Professions; Nursing; Continuing Studies; Pharmacy & Health Sciences; Global College; and Student Development & Retention, the Dean of Admissions provides expertise in development, implementation and assessment of all enrollment management initiatives involving the recruitment and retention of students.
As an inspiring and articulate spokesperson for the university, the Dean of Admissions cultivates and maintains relationships with external agencies, organizations and schools. The Dean develops and implements a comprehensive recruitment plan for all schools and colleges of the Brooklyn Campus and collaborates closely with all campus constituencies, including marketing and communication, faculty, financial aid, and registration to ensure attainment of recruitment goals. He/she participates directly in recruitment activities, including travel, public presentations, reviewing applications, and responding to correspondence. The Dean manages all published information regarding admissions requirements and policies, and collaborates with faculty to develop and monitor compliance with departmental admission criteria.
Principal Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee plans for the achievement of enrollment goals as outlined in the Campus and University strategic plans
- Develop and supervise staff to ensure use of best practices and maximized capabilities to achieve the department’s goals and outcomes. Create a creative, dynamic, productive team culture that delivers strong customer service and personal attention to students and parents, and engenders a philosophy of progressive student development and retention
- Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships within the Brooklyn Campus community, the LIU community and outside the University
- Assess internal and external data and trends to inform planning and budgeting processes as well as provide strategic adjustments in ongoing admissions, enrollment and retention initiatives
- Participate in campus working groups and administrative committees
- Direct the development of operational improvements utilizing ERP/PeopleSoft systems to automate processes, decisions and communications
- Lead the effort to migrate the operations from the traditional SEM model to a paperless environment
- Oversee all assessment and outcomes reporting, including setting goals and productivity outcomes
- Lead the marketing and communications division of the department and regularly interface with University Marketing
- Be responsible for all campus open-house events, including Fall and Spring LIU Days.
The Successful Candidate
Candidates should have a full understanding of admissions processes for institutions with a mission of both access and excellence, particularly within the setting of an urban campus. Knowledge of technology in the areas of media trends as well as information systems supporting the application process is critical for success in the position. This is a position which requires a high level of expertise in all aspects of admissions including: marketing and outreach; applications processes within in a rolling admissions plan; and cross training for campus constituencies who participate in admissions activities. Knowledge of the admissions processes for career-focused students is crucial. Applicants should possess depth of experience and a record of success in building partnerships and strategic relationships both within and outside the institution. The Dean remains up-to-date on best practices in the field of admissions/enrollment management, researching and updating admissions practices, policies, and technology as needed. He/She prepares a variety of reports and data concerning admissions, recruitment and general office management and performs other duties as needed or assigned by the Provost. In addition to planning and managing the admissions operational budget, the Dean hires, supervises, mentors, and prepares performance metrics for admissions staff with the aim of fostering excellence in staff members’ performance of their responsibilities.
Candidates should also demonstrate these qualities:
- The ability to develop and articulate a vision for the admissions office;
- Strong skills as a member of a leadership team;
- Breadth of knowledge of as well as expertise in applying best practice in admissions as it relates to an urban setting;
- Effectiveness in recruiting students from diverse populations;
- Strong public speaking skills and the ability to motivate others;
- The ability to both supervise and mentor staff;
- Creativity, resourcefulness, and innovative thinking.
A Master’s degree and a minimum of seven years of experience in graduate and undergraduate admissions is a must.
