Lake Michigan College, a comprehensive community college located on the shores of southern Lake Michigan, invites inquiries, applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Financial Services.

Lake Michigan College (LMC) is a dynamic institution offering over 100 degree and certificate programs to approximately 7,000 students on its three campuses and Technology Center. Its annual operating budget is approximately $32M. Revenue received from grants totals $19.2M, or 36 percent of all revenue sources. Recently named one of the country’s 50 fastest-growing community colleges within its size range, LMC is an Achieving the Dream school and has a strong performance record in the success of new students enrolled in the program. About the Position

Reporting to the President, the Vice President for Financial Services has broad responsibility for developing and implementing a vision for the College’s financial and business planning services. The Vice President establishes broad direction and systems to ensure accountability for asset protection, long-range financial planning and budget development consistent with the College’s mission and strategic goals. The Vice President also has overall responsibility for the College’s information technologies including telecommunications and computer and telephone systems. Direct reports include the Director of Financial Services, the Director of Purchasing and Support Services and the Executive Director of Information Technologies and Institutional Research. Total staff supervised by the Vice President is 31.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Maintain financial information according to the guidelines set forth by the State of Michigan, under generally accepted accounting practices
  • Administer and manage the College’s financial programs
  • Conduct long and short range financial analysis, planning and forecasting of College programs and projects
  • Direct the annual budget preparation process
  • Administer the coordination of local, state, and federal funds related to the operation of the College, including a substantial number of grants
  • Serve as Treasurer of the Lake Michigan College Foundation.

Successful Candidates

The successful candidate will be a broad strategic thinker with experience working within a diverse community. Demonstrated effectiveness in interpersonal relationships and building strong and productive staff teams are essential. The new Vice President will also possess clear and persuasive verbal and written communication skills and be experienced in considering institutional concerns and trends from all perspectives. He or she will know how to set institutional priorities, engage in data-based decision making, and make significant contributions as a member of the President’s cabinet. Experience working with both financial affairs and IT staff members is a must. The successful candidate will have the ability to generate creative solutions to institutional problems, communicate clearly and effectively with the Board of Trustees, and be able to respond to requests for data and facts in a timely manner. The new Vice President will have a depth and breadth of success in the development of business plans for new institutional initiatives including applications for grant funding. Depth of understanding of information systems including best practice in implementation of systems for improved efficiency and effectiveness is a must. Previous experience in higher education is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in finance or accounting and a minimum of 5 years of senior level management experience managing diverse financial functions. The ability to develop and initiate financial controls and processes is essential, as is knowledge of fund accounting and bonding. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and 7 years of professional experience as described above may also apply.
