The University of San Diego, one of the nation's finest Catholic institutions, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, and Director of the United Front Multicultural Center.   Chartered in 1949, the University is a Carnegie Doctoral Intensive institution enrolling more than 7,500 students. USD is known for its commitment to advancing academic excellence, expanding liberal and professional knowledge, creating a diverse and inclusive community, and preparing leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service.   Domestic students of color represent 26% of all students, and international students comprise 3% of the total student enrollment.   The most recent retention and graduation information for entering full-time freshman cohorts includes an 85% retention rate from the first to second year of study, and a 73% five-year graduation rate. The University's endowment is currently at $ 256 million.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean provides leadership and direction for Diversity and Inclusion as it pertains to university-wide initiatives, the United Front Multicultural Center and the Women's Center. The incumbent will incorporate Integrated Learning principles as the conceptual framework for the development of programs and initiatives to help students achieve greater cultural and global competency. Additional responsibilities include a significant leadership role in developing and implementing collaborative efforts both within Student Affairs units and across the campus.   The Assistant Dean leads the strategic planning process for the area, provides ongoing assessment of the campus climate for underrepresented students and reviews and makes recommendations to executive leadership on policies and practices of special concern to underrepresented or historically oppressed groups of students. The Assistant Dean supervises a staff of 3 full time professional staff 3 Graduate Assistants and ten student staff.   The incumbent also jointly supervises the work of the Director of International Programs.

The successful candidate will demonstrate understanding of and support for the values and perspectives of a Catholic liberal arts education. The successful candidate must also demonstrate competence in the areas of multicultural organizational development, the management and assessment of university-wide change initiatives, assessment of campus climate, and conflict management and mediation. A strong background in the use of qualitative and quantitative assessment of student learning outcomes is highly desirable.  A proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team is a must, as are exceptional platform skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of campus and community constituencies. The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge of and experience in implementing concepts of inclusion and diversity, including designing and delivering instructional programs to promote gender equity, multicultural competence and social justice.   Finally, the candidate must have at least five years of professional experience in higher education, and a minimum of three years of supervisory experience. A master's degree is required. A doctorate is desirable.
