The University of Maine at Farmington, the State’s public liberal arts college invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing. Established in 1864 as Maine’s first public institution of higher education, UMF has both historic and continued strength in teacher education and a contemporary role as Maine’s public liberal arts college. The University offers undergraduate programs in arts and sciences, teacher education, and human services and has reorganized its curriculum to enhance opportunities for in-depth study and undergraduate research. It has also recently launched its first graduate degree program, a Master of Science in Education, in response to the needs of practicing teachers in the region. In 2007 the university opened an exciting new academic facility, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified “green” building that houses programs in education and human services. This commitment to sustainability informs the development of all University facilities projects, including the design of a new Arts Center. UMF boasts the highest graduation rates in the University of Maine System, and has been recognized for its high levels of student engagement as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement. UMF is a founding member of COPLAC, the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, which includes 25 public colleges and universities dedicated to the liberal arts tradition and quality undergraduate education. The Vice President reports to the President and serves on the President’s Council. The successful candidate will have responsibility for the areas of admissions, financial aid, and marketing. The Vice President directs and manages the Office of Admission, works with personnel at the director level to develop corresponding strategies and provides oversight and leadership to all enrollment management functions. Related to the areas of enrollment and marketing, the position’s affiliated responsibilities include: institutional research, evaluation of new initiatives and programs, and coordination of communication between campus constituencies to provide leadership in matters of recruitment and retention.
With a minimum of seven years of experience in enrollment management and marketing, as well as a track record of success in application of best practices, the successful candidate will devise and implement innovative strategies for the recruitment and admission of students. The candidate will have experience with the management and evaluation of comprehensive programs in marketing and admissions, and be familiar with best practice in effective retention strategies. Proficiency in the use of research and information technologies is a must. Experience with strategic communication and marketing skills, strong management skills, and the ability to coordinate and lead multiple offices in support of institutional goals are required. A clear understanding of the strategic role of marketing in relationship to enrollment management and a demonstrated familiarity with and understanding of the linkage of financial aid to student enrollment and retention is also necessary. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to relate effectively with multiple constituencies, and the ability to write clearly and persuasively. A track record of success in engaging academic and student affairs staff members and faculty members in collaborative efforts to fulfill the common goal of student success is vital.
The successful candidate must be an experienced supervisor who understands how to maximize the strengths of staff members and help individuals address performance deficiencies. He or she should have the ability to gain the respect of others, and to involve staff members in the decisions of the units. Excellence in the area of team building among staff members is critical. Requirements include a master’s degree as well as extensive and progressive leadership experience in marketing, communications, enrollment management or other highly related fields in higher education.
